What Is Essential?

What Is Essential?

I keep hearing the term “essential service” being used a lot during this time of worry about Covid-19. I often wonder how God feels about all this commotion about a virus that we know so little about. I am sure that He does Not want us to worry but to have faith in the fact that God is the most Essential item we need. Matthew 6:25-34 tells us not to worry about food, clothes, and drink. Flowers and birds don’t worry because they know God will take care of them. It seems that we so easily forget that God loves us so much and will take care of all of our needs.

God has provided us with the skills and talents that we need each and every day of our lives. I am totally convinced that every service that is provided for us is essential for either the recipient and/ or the provider. Yes, we can do without many things, but if the service is done with care and respect it is a reflection of God’s love.

Romans 13 talks about respect for authority. Romans 13:1 says, “Obey the government for God is the one who put it there. All governments have been placed in power by God.” This verse could start quite a discussion but that is not the point of this blog. 13:8 says, “Pay all your debts, except the debt of love for others. You can never finish paying that! If you love your neighbor, you will fulfill all the requirements of God’s law.” 13:10 says, “Love does no wrong to anyone, so love satisfies all of God's requirements.” We may not like what our government is doing right now, but remember that God is truly the One in charge.

So…What is essential? In my opinion, God’s love is the most essential thing we need right now. What we do and how we react to our current situation should reflect our love for God and His love for everyone. Psalm 63:3 “Your unfailing love is better to me than life itself; how I praise you!”
